Supes Base [which stems from a culturally relevant trend of the mid-2010s when Americans were shortening words like “supes amaze”; thus, Supes Base is the super basic way of saying "super basic"], who's real name is Justina Nguyen, has been immersed in music all of her life. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she began studying classical piano at age 5 and competed in performance + repertoire, as well as theory + composition during her childhood through young adulthood. She also picked up the oboe along the way, as well as joined percussion + drumline in school. What started out as an extracurricular skill and activity that was imposed upon her by her parents morphed into a lifelong, innate passion.

In 2017, with the encouraging words of friends, family, and strangers, as well as guidance from a patient mentor [looking at you, Heaven Malone], Supes Base decided to reincarnate her musical chops through the curation of the music that engrosses her, driven by the orchestration of human connection throughout a space or environment--encouraging unspoken conversation between performer and audience.

She quickly realized that the music she played resonated with people from all different backgrounds with both similar and divergent tastes in music. Music has always been her genuine form of internal expression. Forming that visceral bond with other people can be so powerful; even the slightest nod, cracked smile, or foot tap from a person amplifies those intrinsic micro-moments we all live for. Music comes in all sizes and shapes, and vibestigation is her strength. It’s even more material to work with folks/entities with specific intentions and values that align with her own, namely tied to cultural and social topics to educate, support, and empower communities.

Musex is a cerebral, aural sexperience.

As a vibestigator [one who instigates and investigates vibes], she delivers aural experiences that transcend + blend deeply across genres, decades, and continents. Check out some of her mixes, through which she demonstrates the breadth and depth of various musical styles for different occasions, moods, and mindsets.

Both personally + professionally, she thrives on deciphering human empathy, motivators, behaviors, social + cultural context, and other driving forces that affect the human condition. She is currently:

  • a freelance experience strategy director who consults with creative tech + ad agencies

  • co-founder of Moonlite, a collective that fosters the future of the Asian-American community by creating spaces to celebrate and connect our diverse heritage, talent, and contributions [we produce the NYC Mid-Autumn Fest]

  • resident DJ, designer, and core team member of Peach Presents, a collective dedicated to unifying and celebrating LGBTQ+ women and femme family through music, drinks, food, art and visually stimulating entertainment [we produce a stage at Chicago Pride Fest and Chicago Market Days every year]

  • resident DJ and member of Black Rainbow, a collective that produces an all-inclusive indie, electro, and new wave dance party.
